Introducing a new model for live media workflows — one that embraces MXL and takes it global.

In the last two posts (Live Production: The Creative Cook’s Dilemma, and Live Media’s Mise en Place Problem), I shared how much I enjoy cooking — and how deeply frustrating it is when I can’t find what I need. Whether it’s the cumin or my favorite spatula, those little moments of rummaging break the creative flow. They turn what should be joyful into something brittle.

It turns out that this same pattern exists in live production.

We’ve made huge strides in infrastructure automation. Tools like Terraform and CloudFormation can provision live production environments in minutes. But the hard part — the slow, friction-filled part — begins after boot. That’s where we’re still wiring, staging, configuring, and troubleshooting. And where creativity comes to a halt.

In response, the industry is buzzing about something simple and powerful: shared memory. And for good reason. The idea that media can be accessed, not explicitly routed, is a game-changer. It’s like reaching for an ingredient in a kitchen where everything is already in place — every time.

And now it’s time to share what we’ve been working on to extend that promise even further.

The Kitchen That’s Ready — Everywhere

The Kitchen That’s Ready — Everywhere

Imagine this:

You’re a live production team based in Los Angeles. You need an ultra-low latency feed from Tokyo, an archived clip from Frankfurt, and a real-time caption service running in São Paulo. Normally, you’d be setting up cross-region connections, mapping ports, managing brittle handoffs and struggling with time alignment.

But what if you didn’t need to orchestrate any of that complexity yourself?

What if each of those assets — each signal, service, and transformation — could be accessed anywhere, with just a pointer?

What if your entire production system behaved like everything was in shared memory?

That’s the vision behind TVU MediaMesh®.

	Introducing TVU MediaMesh®

Introducing TVU MediaMesh®

MediaMesh is a live media platform designed to make access to the signals you need as easy as opening a file — while maintaining the video quality, timing precision, and reliability professional broadcasters demand.

At its core, MediaMesh provides global shared memory for live media — allowing any container, service, or virtual machine anywhere in the world to access any media stream through a reference pointer. The heavy lifting of media movement between machines still happens under the hood, similar to established shared memory models such as AWS EFA (Elastic Fabric Adapter) or RoCE (RDMA over Converged Ethernet) based solutions — but from the application’s perspective, there’s no routing, no hand-tuned config files. Just a pointer.

And unlike current shared memory implementations, MediaMesh works across:

VPC, LAN and account boundaries

Cloud and on-prem environments

Compressed and uncompressed formats

You don’t need to rework your formats. You don’t need specialized network hardware. And you don’t need to sacrifice reach for performance.

A Platform in Alignment with MXL

A Platform in Alignment with MXL

The vision of shared memory as a foundation for interoperability is something we deeply support. That’s why we’re enthusiastic about the Media eXchange Layer (MXL) being developed as a Linux Foundation open source project under the leadership of the EBU, still in a pre-release phase but actively being demonstrated by multiple vendors, including TVU Networks, at IBC this year.

MXL brings clarity and momentum to the space by proposing an open, collaborative approach to shared memory media access. It defines a lightweight, powerful layer that promotes interoperability across systems and vendors — something the industry has needed for a long time.

MediaMesh is fully aligned with this direction.

Our goal is to build on the principles MXL is championing by adding the connectivity orchestration, global scale, and format flexibility required to support full-production workflows. MXL focuses on the media exchange interface — MediaMesh focuses on delivering the right media to the right place, automatically, at the right time.

If MXL is the chef’s station—a perfectly organized counter for the task at hand—then MediaMesh is the global commissary. It ensures that the exact specialty ingredients, tools, and prepped items arrive at your chef’s station, identical and ready to go, whether your kitchen is in New York, São Paulo, or Singapore.”

	Mise en Place, Made Real

Mise en Place, Made Real

Back to the kitchen metaphor.

Mise en place is a culinary term which means “putting in place, setting up”. It’s not just about having good tools. It’s about having every tool in the right place at the right time, without delay or confusion. Every feed. Everyone. Connected.

That’s the vision behind MediaMesh — and it’s one we’re actively making real with our partners.

Want to move remote venue audio into your SSL console, time-aligned and with low latency? We’re working to make this simpler and more reliable than ever.

Want to access signals of any format directly within your Grass Valley AMPP production tools — without spinning up extra computers in order to fan out feeds to operators? That’s the future we’re building together.

And want to control all of this from familiar EVS Cerebrum panels? You can — today.

Want your director in the U.S. to call camera shots for a soccer match in Europe? MediaMesh keeps latency low enough to make that vision real.

We’re actively advancing this vision with our partners ; these, plus MRL and Mediatest, Chyron, Eluvio, Pixelstorm, In-Sync, Telos Alliance, Junger Audio, Vizrt, On-Hertz, Spectatr.ai, Vela, Kinetiq and Camb.ai — all building on the solid foundation of MediaMesh global shared memory.

	Ready to Create

Ready to Create

In the end, creativity thrives when friction disappears.

We don’t just want to automate provisioning. We want to unlock experimentation in live media — so teams can produce more shows, adapt faster, and try new tools without a half-day of signal stitching every time.

MediaMesh makes this possible. And we’re excited to share it with you.

	Let’s Talk

Let’s Talk

We’ll be showing MediaMesh at IBC from September 12-15, 2025 — including how it complements MXL and enables scalable, low-latency global workflows.

If you’re attending, let’s connect.

Because the kitchen’s set. The knives are sharp. The ingredients are prepped. It’s time to cook.

Why broadcast workflows still feel like cooking without your knives — even in the age of automated kitchens.

In my last post, I talked about how much I love to cook — and how much that love is tested when I can’t find the tools or ingredients I need. Instead of getting lost in the joy of creating, I find myself hunting through drawers, questioning my memory, and breaking my own rhythm.

That same friction shows up in my professional world too — live media production.

We have powerful tools. Incredible tech. Cloud elasticity. But when it’s time to actually do the thing — to get the show live — something always gets in the way.

	Broadcast without Mise en Place

Broadcast Without Mise en Place

If you’ve worked in live production — especially cloud-based REMI workflows — you know this story:

Standing up cloud infrastructure using tools like Terraform or CloudFormation

Watching EC2s spin up in minutes — which is genuinely impressive

And then spending the next 4 to 8 hours manually:

Modifying configuration files

Connecting contribution signals

Mapping IP addresses and ports

Diagnosing app mismatches and encoder quirks

Double-checking if your monitoring tools are actually pointing at the right stream

It’s like having a professional kitchen delivered to your driveway — but all the drawers are locked, and nothing is labeled.

The mise en place is… missing.

The Real Work Begins After Boot

The Real Work Begins After Boot

Let’s be clear: the infrastructure is there. We’ve nailed that part. Our teams can, and often do, provision complex live environments at the push of a button.

But what comes next still feels far too manual, too brittle, too opaque. Every production team I talk to says the same thing:

“We can spin up the machines in minutes. But wiring the signals and getting the system actually ready to produce takes too long.”

They’re not building infrastructure. They’re wrestling with integration.

It’s not the kitchen itself that’s slow to build — it’s the process of finding the cutting boards, figuring out where the knives went, and fixing the broken walk-in fridge that someone forgot to plug in.

A Glimpe of a Better Way

A Glimpse of a Better Way

That’s why there’s growing excitement around a deceptively simple but transformative idea:

What if you didn’t have to move the media at all? What if you could just reference it — like memory?

This is the core promise of shared memory in live production workflows. Rather than building out complex media transport layers, the media is made available in place — and applications simply access it directly, zero copy, without unnecessary re-encapsulation or re-transmission.

In a kitchen, it’s like this: instead of walking to the fridge or sending a runner to the pantry, you simply think “lemon zest” — and it appears, already measured, right next to your cutting board.

The concept itself isn’t new. Shared memory has been used for years in various production systems, but what’s changing now is how the industry is beginning to rally around shared memory as a standard interface — not just a vendor-specific optimization.

And that’s where the Media eXchange Layer (MXL) comes in.

MXL, developed under the leadership of the EBU, isn’t introducing the idea of shared memory — but it is amplifying the conversation. What makes MXL noteworthy is that it proposes an open, interoperable model for shared memory access. By moving beyond proprietary implementations, MXL lays the groundwork for a more composable, multi-vendor ecosystem.

In short, it’s not just about making media accessible faster. It’s about making it more accessible to more people and systems, more easily.

	What’s Next

What’s Next

In the final post of this series, I’ll share how we’re building on this momentum — extending the shared memory model beyond current limitations in scope, infrastructure, and format.

We’ll introduce a new approach that’s not just compatible with MXL — but completes the mise en place promise by making it global, compressed-stream aware, and orchestrated by design.

Because the kitchen doesn’t just need to exist.

It needs to be ready — every drawer unlocked, every ingredient instantly within reach.

Why the joy of creating is so often derailed by the hunt for ingredients and tools

I love to cook.

Not fast cooking — not the “30-minute weeknight dinner” kind. I mean the kind of cooking where I can explore, experiment, and play. I love discovering new ingredients, adjusting flavor profiles mid-stream, and plating something unexpected that feels like a small act of personal expression.

But here’s the thing: I don’t always get to cook that way. Not because I don’t want to — but because I lead a busy life. And when I do find time to create, there’s one consistent frustration that pulls me out of the flow every time:

Where did I put the cumin?
What happened to my favorite spatula?
I swear I had another shallot…

It’s always something. A tool I thought was in the drawer. An ingredient I thought I had. And suddenly, instead of creating, I’m rummaging. Hunting. Backtracking. Trying to reconstruct the kitchen that, in my mind, was already set.

Mise en Place – The Dream State

Mise en Place — The Dream State

In the culinary world, there’s a French term for the ideal: mise en place, which means “everything in its place.” It’s the practice of preparing and organizing every ingredient and tool before you start cooking.

In a professional kitchen, mise en place is non-negotiable. Chefs can’t afford to stop and search mid-service. Their knives are sharp, their components measured, their tools laid out like instruments before a concert. Everything is ready to go.

At home, though? Not so much. In my kitchen, mise en place is more of a goal than a reality. And when it fails — when something’s missing, dirty, or misplaced — it breaks the rhythm. It steals time. It drains energy.

And honestly? It steals joy.

From the Kitchen to the Control Room

From the Kitchen to the Control Room

As frustrating as that is in my kitchen, I’ve seen the exact same dynamic in my professional life — working in live media systems.

Production teams today are bursting with creative potential. We’ve got high-quality cameras, powerful processing tools, cloud infrastructure, AI-assisted metadata, and more. But when it’s time to actually build a live workflow, so much of the effort goes into assembling the setup.

It’s like we’re still unpacking boxes and unrolling cutting boards while the orders are already coming in.

Setting up SRT feeds one by one. Correcting IP address typos. Calling the venue to figure out what happened to my feed. Troubleshooting alignment issues. Troubleshooting application configurations. Finding the virtual version of that missing spatula — again.

The tools are powerful, no doubt. But we spend so much time just trying to get them into place.

	Creation shouldn’t be a hunt

Creation Shouldn’t Be a Hunt

Whether it’s a kitchen or a live production environment, the problem is the same: when you lose access to your tools or ingredients — even briefly — you lose momentum. And when you lose momentum, creativity suffers.

It’s not about speed, necessarily. I’m not asking for faster cooking or faster media pipelines. I’m asking for smoother ones. For environments where everything is in place when you need it. Where you can focus entirely on creation — not construction.

That’s what mise en place is supposed to be. That’s what we should be striving for — not just in kitchens, but in media infrastructure, too.

	Up next

Up Next

In the next post, I’ll explore how this lack of “mise en place” shows up in modern live video workflows — and why new developments in shared memory are beginning to shift the paradigm.

But for now, I’ll leave you with this:

Creativity thrives in environments where tools and ingredients are ready, and the friction is gone.

Wouldn’t it be something if our systems — not just our kitchens — actually helped us stay in the flow?

With Skype TX retiring in May 2025, broadcasters are rethinking how to bring remote guests into live productions. Designed to simplify on-air contributions, Skype became a trusted tool for integrating talent with minimal setup.

Now, production teams need a replacement that not only matches its features but improves on them with higher-quality audio, video, and broadcast-level integration.

	What’s happening to Skype TX?

What’s Happening to Skype TX?

Skype TX will no longer be supported after May 2025. According to Microsoft, this change is part of their strategy to streamline and focus on Microsoft Teams as their primary platform for personal communication and collaboration. Skype users are being encouraged to transition to Teams, which now includes broadcasting enhancements such as NDI (Network Device Interface) and SDI (Serial Digital Interface) support.

While this may seem like a logical progression, Teams was originally developed for internal business meetings, not live broadcasting. Production crews, newsrooms, and media professionals who relied on Skype TX for real-time guest interviews and contributions must now find a way to replace the platform without compromising video quality, latency, or ease of use.

Microsoft Replaces Skype with Teams — But How Does It Stack Up for Broadcasters?

Microsoft Replaces Skype with Teams — But How Does It Stack Up for Broadcasters?

To replace Skype TX, Teams now supports NDI output and SDI workflows, allowing broadcasters to extract guest feeds and integrate them into live production setups.

That said, there are still a few aspects to keep in mind:

Guest access is complex: Requires downloads, logins, and unfamiliar steps, slowing down setup for remote talent.

Video compression: Prioritizes bandwidth savings over quality, resulting in audio and video not suited for broadcast.

Limited IFB and audio routing: Lacks native mix-minus, IFB, or return feeds.

Enterprise licensing requirements: Advanced features often need additional Microsoft licenses.

Teams may work in a pinch—especially for organizations already invested in Microsoft infrastructure—but broadcasters seeking advanced production features and a seamless guest experience may also want to consider more specialized alternatives.

Over the past five years, live cloud production has become commonplace for digital-only productions and remote commentary applications. It’s also finding its way into certain positions within remote production workflows such as graphics. There’s even been examples of full-on cloud live productions for major sporting events. However, despite the potential economic advantages of cloud compute for event based workflows, as of yet, the vast majority of live productions today are still done using on-premise equipment. As one major broadcaster put it, “we’re actively experimenting, but so far less than 1% of our total annual live productions are done in the cloud”. This begs a question:

Why?

While one can argue that there are perhaps multiple areas where improvements can be made (and there are), most of these are comparatively minor refinements. However, there is one challenge that we must most definitely overcome, one that today neutralizes the economic argument for more widespread adoption of live cloud production: the engineering toil associated with deploying and connecting a cloud PCR (production control room).

“Too much toil” is a sentiment that rings true with multiple broadcasters experimenting with live cloud production. As one broadcaster in the trenches with live cloud production stated, “Using infrastructure as code tools such as Terraform, I can deploy the entire infrastructure of a cloud PCR in minutes, but then connecting signals and configuring software on top of that infrastructure can take hours, if not an entire day.” When the toil associated with connecting & configuring a PCR consumes hours of highly trained technical staff, simply put, live cloud production will not scale. The economics won’t work. Yes, it takes months versus minutes to build an on-premise PCR, but once it is built, one can configure the equipment and connect signals quickly. Today, the cloud-based connection/configuration process takes more effort – for each production – in the cloud. And this toil expands linearly with the scale of the production, the more cameras, the more operator positions, the more manual work.

Has live cloud production hit its ultimate plateau, relegated to smaller scale digital only productions and niche applications, or are we in what the Gartner Group calls “the trough of disillusionment” – a transitory phase before we overcome today’s challenges?

My answer is decidedly the latter.

Discovering and securely connecting to signals on the ground can and should be as easy as connecting an Alexa or Google Assistant. One shouldn’t have to worry about spinning up more cloud compute just to distribute a signal to additional destinations. Signal transformation (resolution, dynamic range, frame rate, color space) can and should be automatic based on global settings. And, yes, the broadcast industry can even run intense video processing applications in containers, speeding deployment time and enabling benefits such as auto-scaling. Moreover, all of this can be done in a multi-vendor environment so that media and entertainment customers retain the capability to choose best-of-breed.

At TVU Networks, we’ve laid the architectural foundation to accomplish this. As we approach NAB 2025, we are excited to share that foundation with customers, partners and other vendors. Our aim is to collectively chart a course to deliver the full economic potential of live cloud production. Working together, and embracing industry initiatives such as the EBU’s Dynamic Media Facility, we are 100% bullish on the future of live cloud production.

Stay tuned. 2025 should be an exciting year.

TVU Networks has come a long way since its early days as a company known primarily for mobile broadcasting backpacks. What started as an innovative solution for live video transmission has since evolved into a full-fledged cloud-based ecosystem that is transforming the way content creators capture, produce, and distribute media. This evolution reflects a broader industry shift toward cloud technology and IP-based workflows, and TVU Networks has been at the forefront of this transformation.

The Early Days: Reinventing Live Broadcasting

Founded in 2005, TVU Networks quickly made a name for itself with its revolutionary TVU Player –which had millions of users. It opened global content to viewers everywhere via its simple easy-to-use platform. This paved the way for bigger broadcast innovations. Starting with the TVU Pack, the company pioneered the use of cellular bonding technology, which allowed broadcasters to transmit high-quality live video from virtually anywhere without requiring expensive satellite trucks or extensive infrastructure. This backpack solution, now known as TVU One, revolutionized live broadcasting, enabling news teams, sports broadcasters, and other media professionals to go live from the field with unprecedented ease and reliability.

Beyond Hardware: Transitioning to Software and IP Solutions

As the broadcasting industry began shifting away from traditional hardware-based infrastructure to software-defined workflows, TVU Networks recognized the need to adapt. The company began expanding its offerings beyond portable video transmission devices, integrating IP-based solutions into its portfolio.

This led to the introduction of TVU Grid, a cloud-based video switching, routing, and distribution system that enabled broadcasters to share live feeds in real time over IP networks. By leveraging cloud and IP connectivity, TVU Networks helped eliminate the limitations of satellite and fiber-based transmission, making content sharing more flexible and cost-effective.

The Cloud Revolution: Building a Complete Ecosystem

With the increasing demand for remote production and cloud-based workflows, TVU Networks led the charge in transforming the industry by developing an entire ecosystem of cloud-native solutions. Long before cloud production became a necessity, TVU had already recognized its potential, pioneering advancements that set the stage for the evolving landscape of live media production.

In 2017, the company introduced TVU Producer, a cloud-based live production tool, enabling content creators to mix, edit, and produce high-quality live broadcasts from anywhere in the world. This innovation proved to be a game-changer, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, when remote production became essential rather than optional.

One major advantage of cloud-based workflows is their environmental impact. By reducing the need for extensive travel, large production teams, and heavy equipment, cloud solutions significantly reduce the carbon footprint of live production. Fewer vehicles on the road, less physical infrastructure, and a shift to digital collaboration contribute to a greener, more sustainable broadcasting industry.

TVU’s ecosystem continued to grow with solutions like TVU Partyline for real-time remote collaboration, TVU Channel for cloud-based playout, and AI-driven tools that automate content management and distribution. These innovations positioned TVU Networks as a leader in cloud-driven media production, providing broadcasters, sports organizations, and other enterprises with adaptable workflow solutions.

Looking Ahead: Microservices & a Future Built on AI

Looking ahead, TVU Networks is embracing microservices, artificial intelligence, and automation to further streamline media production.

TVU’s engineering philosophy is built around microservices – modular building blocks that enable powerful new capabilities. By leveraging hundreds of microservices within TVU field transmitters and SaaS applications, broadcasters can create dynamic workflows that seamlessly integrate with on-site infrastructures in record time. For example, TVU is using microservices to add critical capabilities to live productions, such as AI-based closed captioning and frame-by-frame metadata creation.

By combining AI-powered indexing, automated metadata tagging, real-time content recommendations, and microservices-driven workflows, the company is streamlining video management and distribution for broadcasters.

TVU Networks will showcase its latest advancements at NAB 2025.
A custom tripod and smartphone kit running TVU Anywhere was sent to each vote-counting location, enabling real-time video feeds despite cellular network pressures. This user-friendly setup allowed non-technical staff to configure it easily and supported an eco-friendly broadcast approach.

Hundreds of live feeds were ingested and recorded in real-time on the TVU Search cloud platform, displayed in a mosaic view using TVU Partyline. This setup provided tailored regional coverage for England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, demonstrating TVU Networks’ commitment to efficient and scalable broadcast solutions.

TVU Networks Election AI workflows to support your team and save time

AI-driven workflows represent another area where TVU Networks is setting new standards. TVU Search, for instance, offers instant ingestion and indexing of streams, complete with rich metadata. This feature ensures that teams never miss crucial content, enabling them to clip and distribute footage effortlessly. With automatic alerts, teams can concentrate on other tasks, knowing they’ll be notified the moment relevant content becomes available. This tool also makes it easy to create tailored content for different platforms and audiences in real time. Want to be notified when a certain candidate takes the podium? It can do that. How about when a candidate mentions a specific phrase like “inflation” an automatic clip is generated. This solution makes it possible.

TVU Search shows how AI can significantly streamline media workflows, saving both time and resources.

Connecting the world through IP

TVU Grid further simplifies the landscape of live video distribution over IP. This platform facilitates point-to-multipoint, bidirectional live video sharing, making public video sources globally accessible. Integrated with the TVU Command Center, it offers centralized management of all TVU solutions, including real-time status updates on transmissions and servers.
