World Roller Games Chooses TVU Networks for Coverage of Intense 11-Day Competition

Multiple TVU solutions helped broadcast events from across 14 venues in Barcelona

Barcelona, Spain — July 26, 2019 — TVU Networks, the market and technology leader in live IP video solutions, has announced its involvement in the broadcast of the world’s largest event for roller sports, the 2019 World Roller Games in Barcelona, Spain.
This year, The World Roller Games boasted 11 different disciplines including inline freestyle, rink hockey, roller derby, skateboarding and more. Over 4000 athletes participated representing 81 countries from all over the globe, as well as over 140,000 visitors.
The companies producing the World Roller Games were in search of an efficient and reliable way to broadcast from multiple remote locations throughout five cities. The organizers also wanted to find an innovative way to cover the diverse array of sports represented in the competition from the various types of venues in which the games would be held.
Ultimately, the producers of the event turned to TVU Networks. They deployed 14 TVU One transmitters, some of which were connected to OB vans at venues and the rest of which were mobile. Feeds were synchronized using TVU Timelock and sent to the Technical Operations Center, where producers could insert graphics, create highlights and then distribute streaming video worldwide with TVU Servers. Six synchronized signals were sent to La Xarxa for distribution using one TVU Remote Production System (RPS) unit. TVU also provided the World Roller Games with a full duplex VOIP channel which is integrated with all TVU One devices so that people at the venues could communicate with those in the Technical Operations Center.
“TVU offered incredibly flexible solutions as well as a wide range of equipment to use for everything from transmission to remote production” said Javier Grima, Executive Producer of the World Roller Games 2019. “We were able to capture, produce and distribute the live broadcast at a cheaper cost than traditional satellite and fibre solutions without sacrificing quality. The technology was so advanced that it made operations easier and more efficient than before.”
These TVU products and solutions performed flawlessly, despite less-than-ideal circumstances. The speed marathon final, which ran a course of 42,195 meters, was broadcast from the streets of Barcelona from a motorbike. TVU One was able to transmit high-quality, low-latency HD video while on the move over a significant distance for the complete duration of the race. Additionally, the beachside location of the speed road competition track made it difficult to get a strong connection. Regardless, transmission from the site was smooth, with minimal sub-second delay.
“We’re honored to have helped broadcast the 2019 World Roller Games,” said David Jorba, TVU Networks’ EVP, Managing Director of Europe. “The uninterrupted high-quality coverage across the 14 different venues was further testament to the unparalleled performance of our solutions in challenging environments and network conditions.”
All TVU Networks solutions utilize HEVC/H.265 compression standard to optimize data use and generate less overhead, leading to lower operational costs while delivering even greater transmission reliability. TVU One’s award-winning mobile IP video transmitter is a breakthrough in size and performance, allowing up to 4K60fps HDR live transmissions at bit-rates as low as 3Mbps. TVU Timelock and TVU RPS are a reference in the industry for remote, multi-camera production, offering unmatched synchronization and wireless capabilities over a standard internet connection.

As a result, Newsource affiliates will be able to use TVU’s AI based speech and facial recognition to quickly search and find practically any live or archived media content.

Extreme Remote Mobile Production

The increasing need for more variety and volume of content requires new cost-effective ways to produce from the field. TVU Remote Production System (RPS) enables synchronized multi-camera remote production using a broadcaster’s existing studio control room and a public Internet connection from the field. Camera feeds are transmitted from a remote location back to the studio over IP, reducing the need for extensive on-site production trucks or large crews.

Al Kamel Systems, a leading motor sports live stats broadcast production specialist, uses TVU RPS to add racing graphics from remote sites, and the TVU Nano for video transmitter for real-time transmission of video from the cockpit of cars participating in the Credit Andorrà G-Series electric car Snow Rally Championships.

Transmissions can be sent straight to the cloud. Events can be produced using cloud-based TVU Producer, a solution whose user-friendly web interface allows producers to make quick cuts, insert graphic overlays from Singular.live’s library, switch between multiple sources, manage audio, compile highlights and instant replays, capture slow-motion clips, and push finalized content to TV and the Internet – all over IP.

To maximize quality and reliability of live video transmission despite less-than-ideal environmental circumstances, Spanish public broadcaster RTVE deployed TVU Networks’ TVU Nano Router and TVU Anywhere to send live video from the Paris-Dakar Rally, held in the Peruvian desert, to the RTVE studio in Barcelona. The live IP streaming videos were shot on smartphones and the content aired live over on RTVE flagship channels La 1 and Teledeporte in broadcast quality.

TVU Networks Partners with Largest Network of Videographers, Stringr, to Source Custom Live Video Within Existing Workflow

Access to Stringr’s Network of Over 90,000 Amateur and Professional Freelance Videographers Now Available through TVU Global Grid

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA – June 19, 2019TVU Networks, the global technology and innovation leader in live IP solutions, today announced its partnership with Stringr, the premium video marketplace for custom, high-quality, video content. Stringr’s network of professional and amateur videographers is now available through the TVU Global Grid, the Cloud platform for content owners to contribute and pull video, enabling assets to be shared and sold on a global scale. The relationship leverages Stringr’s robust network of videographers and the established global presence of the TVU Grid distribution platform.

TVU Grid is an IP-based switching, routing and distribution system. With TVU Grid, stations can route live video streams over IP networks to one or more Grid-enabled news stations anywhere in the world with sub-second latency. Using its TVU Global Grid platform, users can exchange, share, and sell video content. Users can view public video sources that are available around the world, and request to take the stream and make it available for their own viewing audience.  For a demo of TVU Grid, watch here.

Stringr allows users to access its content library and request custom footage from over 90,000 videographers around the world. In addition, broadcasters, publishers and brands in the U.S. and U.K. can access Stringr’s livestreaming function, which launch earlier this year. Users will now be able to put out requests through TVU Grid, and as a videographer in Stringr’s network begins sharing live footage, it will be transmitted directly to TVU Grid.

“The TVU Grid is used by thousands of newsrooms around the world,” said Brian McNeill, COO and Co-Founder of Stringr. “Integrating Stringr will give TVU users all the benefits of our platform, without having to flip between the two, therefore saving time, cutting unnecessary costs and maintaining content quality.”

The Stringr/TVU Grid workflow is seamless. A joint customer requests video from Stringr. When one of Stringr’s 90,000+ videographers goes live with video matching the request, the feed is sent through Stringr, straight into TVU Grid. From there, the joint customer can take the feed just as they would for any other TVU content.

“By incorporating Stringr’s network through TVU Grid, our customers have the best of both worlds – high-quality, low latency live video distributed through TVU Grid with the extensive Stringr videographer marketplace,” said TVU Networks’ CEO Paul Shen. “The combination enables our customers to deliver breaking news faster than ever before and opens up monetization opportunities for their own content. It makes the live production process much simpler with a streamlined workflow while providing greater flexibility and more options for dynamic content.”

A mutual customer brought the two companies in touch with one another, and the opportunity to partner grew from that initial connection. Both TVU Networks and Stringr executives saw the value in a solution combining TVU Grid’s access to global live coverage with Stringr’s ability to source live footage. “The combination of these two products allows our partners to get more live coverage, quickly, cost effectively, and within the same workflow they’ve always used,” added McNeill.

TVU Networks and Stringr are currently working with a major cable network and plan to expand to other partners shortly.

TV Azteca Deploys TVU Remote Production System for Annual Hollywood Awards Show Coverage

Cost-Effective Set Up Provided High-Quality, Reliable Live Coverage from Remote and “Studio” Location

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA – April 23, 2019 – TVU Networks, the global technology and innovation leader in live IP solutions, today announced that TV Azteca, one of Mexico’s largest media companies, produced its coverage of Hollywood’s most prestigious awards show held annually in February with the company’s innovative TVU Remote Production System(TVU RPS). TVU RPS was used to transmit video footage from TV Azteca’s mobile unit at the venue in Los Angeles to a remote studio set up in a nearby hotel. A small stage on the terrace of the hotel suite served as a makeshift talk show set for commentary from the hosts during the live broadcast.

With director Alfonso Cuarón taking home three statuettes that night for “Roma,” the critically acclaimed drama set in Mexico, this year’s award celebration was of considerable regional interest to TV Azteca viewers. It was the first Mexican film to win the “Best Foreign Language” category.

“This was likely the most watched this presentation has ever been in Mexico,” said José Vera, Especial Events Technical Director, TV Azteca. “We needed to create a broadcast for our audience that looked great, included a lot of live interaction with our hosts, but didn’t add a ton of cost. TVU RPS maintained extremely high video quality video as it traveled from the hotel to the production unit and back. It allowed us to reliably transport video from one location to another, yielding professional-level results while still making economic sense.”

TVU RPS allows broadcasters to leverage an existing studio control room infrastructure and a public Internet connection from any venue to deliver frame accurate, genlocked and synchronized multi-camera remote production. The product consists of one rack-mount transmitter (encoder) and one rack-mount receiver (decoder).

TV Azteca installed the RPS encoder at the hotel and the RPS decoder at the mobile unit as a backup solution. The networks successfully sent three high-quality streams from the hotel terrace to the parked mobile unit at the theatre, as well as a return feed from the mobile unit back to the hotel.

“They were looking for something with rock-solid reliability and no degradation during transmission that was also cost-effective,” said Rafael Castillo, General Manager of Latin America, TVU Networks. “RPS was an ideal solution for them. With RPS, there is zero video degradation, no matter the transmission distance. I’m thrilled we were able to help TV Azteca produce such dynamic coverage of a very important live event.”

RPS performed so well during the event, that TV Azteca plans to extend its use to coverage of sporting events, including football matches.

TVU RPS provides a lower cost alternative for live remote synchronized multi-camera coverage for news and sports. With RPS, broadcasters no longer need to rely on production trucks and large production crews. It features an easy-to-use web interface for monitoring and controlling all aspects of the transmission, including real-time previews of all-six channels, current bit-rate and latency. The TVU RPS transmitter can encode up to six synchronized SDI sources and transmit high quality and low latency IP video to the TVU receiver, which in turn outputs six synchronized SDI outputs.

The products and technologies selected are all next-generation improvements and essential in the creation of a story-centric workflow. We’re focused on pushing the limits of what’s possible to meet our customers’ live content production challenges today and in the future. I believe our run of award wins during the past 10 years as an NAB exhibitor is a direct reflection of our continued commitment to live production innovation.”

In the first NAB Show 2019 Product of the Year Awards, TVU Networks won in the AI/Machine Learning category for its TVU MediaMind Appliance – an AI-based metadata generation and search engine that speeds production performance and content reuse. This is an independently judged awards program that recognizes the most significant and promising new products and technologies exhibited during NAB.

TVU MediaMind appliance is a metadata generation and search engine that speeds production performance and content reuse within an existing broadcast media supply chain. The system uses a combination of time-code and AI-based facial and speech recognition to generate metadata. And an open API lets users connect directly with MAM and NLE systems. Because the MediaMind appliance utilizes both AI and time code to generate search results, it can convert audio and video into structured data in real-time. It’s capable of searching a raw asset at any stage of production – from assignment through to on-air. With the help of TVU’s AI engine, real-time speech recognition lets users find text results even faster than they would searching for images alone. Users simply type in what they’re looking for and the appropriate section of a time code appears. The real-time content search engine uses time code to identify each asset with a unique ID.

TV Technology magazine presented TVU Networks with a Best of Show Award for theTVU One 4K cellular mobile transmitter during the 2019 NAB Show. The awards are judged by a panel of industry experts on the criteria of innovation, feature set, cost efficiency and performance in serving the industry. All nominated products are featured in a special Best of Show Awards Program Guide, which will be distributed in digital edition form to more than 100,000 readers of seven Future publications.

Also introduced during the 2019 NAB Show, the 4K version of the TVU One mobile transmitter, a cellular mobile unit with the ability to transmit Ultra-HD/4Kp60 HEVC content. The TVU One TM1000 is TVU’s flag-ship HEVC cellular 4G/LTE mobile transmitter. “UHD/4Kp60 is a much more technically challenging resolution to achieve in a cellular mobile unit,” explained Chang. “However, we are able to overcome these challenges and encode video in full UHD/4K at 60 frames per second.”

The TVU One offers a robust set of functions to meet the needs of any live video broadcaster. It delivers industry-leading video transmission resiliency and HD picture quality from an ultra-compact and rugged hardware chassis. With TVU One, users can fully leverage the versatility of a lightweight IP-based video transmitter in the field as a part of an end-to-end workflow without sacrificing performance, features, or picture quality.

PRODU presented TVU Networks with a NAB 2019 Tech Award for its IS+technology.  TVU’s proprietary transmission algorithm, IS+ enables users to simultaneously transmit over multiple mediums with sub-second latency. Thanks to IS+, TVU transmitters can simultaneously aggregate any combination of bandwidth mediums including cellular 3G/4G LTE, WiFi, Ethernet, Ka-band and Ku-band satellite, microwave, microwave mesh and BGAN to deliver a reliable and dependable broadcast picture with latency as low as 0.5 seconds. IS+ uses advanced Forward Error Correction technology to produce superior transmission performance. When compared to traditional FEC/ARQ methods, IS+ uses minimal data overhead without latency introduced by packet retransmission. The result is a reliable transmission with high-quality images and ultra-low latency even in a moving vehicle.

NAB 2019: TVU Networks Introducing Internet-Based, Point-to-Point Transmission System for Live Video

TVU G-Link  Delivers Reliable and Cost-effective HD Quality Video Distribution

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA – April 2, 2019 – At NAB 2019 TVU Networks, the global technology and innovation leader in live IP solutions, will introduce TVU G-Link, an Internet-based solution for live point-to-point transmission. TVU G-Link provides an affordable and reliable way to achieve high-quality transmission using only the public Internet to deliver HD video from one location to another with half-second latency. G-Link is ideal for applications such as news and sports broadcast as well as houses of worship looking to send live HD video from point to point. TVU Networks will show G-Link for the first time in Booth #C1707 during the NAB Show in Las Vegas next month.

“For broadcasters, video producers, and organizations looking to easily and affordably transmit high-quality, live video from a single point to another, TVU G-Link addresses that need,” said Paul Shen, CEO, TVU Networks. “Dedicated fiber, satellite and microwaves lines are ultimately much more expensive than implementing an IP-based solution like G-Link for high-quality, live video transmission. We’re eager to show how this simple and inexpensive set up can help our current and prospective customers during the NAB show.”

G-Link runs on TVU MediaMind servers, with two servers paired together to form a link. The MediaMind servers are professional video hardware decoders designed for the centralized viewing, control and distribution of live video content. Within G-Link, one server acts as the transmitter/encoder and the other as the receiver/decoder. The servers support a range of input and output source types and remain securely connected regardless of the distance between them, making them ultra-reliable and deployable wherever necessary throughout the world.

The G-Link “transmitter” server takes incoming transmissions from any TVU Networks’ transmission device, as well as SDI video input, or external IP video and sends footage to the receiving server, which then outputs in SDI and IP formats in high resolution. The receiver can also output directly to social media platforms such as YouTube and Facebook.

Key Features of G-Link:

  • Enables configuration of encoding (source name, type, bit-rate, delay) and decoding
  • Ability to view encoding/transmission status of each link
  • Local control: query, fast search, start/stop transmission
  • Central control: management of multiple G-Link devices

G-Link can be deployed anywhere in the world as a centralized management platform, serving as the management hub of all connected devices from one location to another, no matter where in the world each of the two sites are located. In so doing, transmission costs incurred between countries can be greatly reduced with the use of public internet.

NAB 2019: TVU MediaMind Appliance Combines Time Code and AI-Based Facial and Speech Recognition for Immediate Search and Reuse of Video

New Solution Part of TVU MediaMind Ecosystem of Cloud-Based Production, Distribution and Global Asset Sharing Marketplace

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA – March 26, 2019 – At NAB 2019 TVU Networks, the global technology and innovation leader in live IP solutions, will announce the new MediaMind Appliance, a metadata generation and search engine that speeds production performance and content reuse within an existing broadcast media supply chain. The system uses a combination of time-code and AI-based facial and speech recognition to generate metadata. And an open API lets users connect directly with MAM and NLE systems. TVU Networks will exhibit in booth #C1707 during the NAB Show in Las Vegas next month.

“TV stations and news agencies have considerable media assets, but how can they be considered assets if they can’t be reused and repurposed,” said Paul Shen, CEO, TVU Networks. “While there are many ways to measure the value of content in the media industry, there are ultimately only two: who gets to the audience first and what content is viewed and reused the most? The faster the content spreads, the more it is reused and repurposed, the greater the value of the content and the lower the production cost. That’s what’s driven the creation of the TVU MediaMind appliance and the entire MediaMind workflow.”

Clips can be marked and saved for immediate use. There’s no need to wait for pre-production to finish or for the video file to be entered into the MAM system. With the reporter still on scene, the clip is ready to go online or on-air.

The Components

The TVU MediaMind appliance is part of a TVU SaaS model that uses the TVU MediaMind server (dual-channel VS3500/VS3100 models) as the edge server. The servers can receive video signals from any TVU Networks’ transmission device as well as process IP streams of standard transmission protocol, SDI video, and store files in any MAM system. They are professional video hardware decoders designed for the centralized viewing, control and distribution of live video content.

In addition to the MediaMind appliance, the MediaMind ecosystem includes the following cloud-based products: TVU Producer for multi-camera live video production; TVU Remote Production System (RPS) for remote production using a broadcaster’s existing studio control room and a public Internet connection from the field; TVU CAS (Contribution Automation Solution) for the identification of all video acquisition resources on a given story at acquisition; TVU Grid – an IP-based video switching, routing and distribution solution; and TVU Grid Market, a central source for content owners to contribute and pull video enabling assets to be shared and sold on a global scale.

TVU MediaMind Appliance Highlights:

  • Generates metadata for each video segment based on AI for facial and speech recognition and video time code
  • Realize assets value with immediate reuse and repurposing across platforms, programs and organizations
  • Exposure of assets to global media market
  • Saves expensive hardware cost
