User's Guide for the TVU Pause/Resume and PVR Capabilities

Pause/Resume Capabilities in the TVUPlayer Application

TVUPlayer versions 2.4.5 and above include Pause/Resume functions that let you pause a program you're watching, and resume it later. You can also skip backwards and forwards through a program while watching it.

To be able to use Pause/Resume, you must have a TVU account, and you must sign in within the TVUPlayer. You can create a TVU account here. When you have a TVU account, you can sign in by clicking on "Sign in" at the top right of the TVUPlayer. Once you do this, you'll see the Pause button underneath the video screen turn from gray to blue, showing that you have access to the Pause/Resume functions.

The TVUPlayer controls, including Pause, Skip Backward, Skip Forward, and Seek

The new TVUPlayer automatically starts recording on any channel you watch. While watching a channel, you can:

  • Pause (center button): this pauses the current program, allowing you to come back and continue watching later.
  • Resume: When you're Paused, the center button changes to Play - click this to continue watching your program.
  • Seek (horizontal scroll bar right under the video): Click on the Seek button and drag it left or right to go backwards and forwards within the program you're watching. For example, if you drag it all the way to the left, you'll be watching what was on when you first started the channel.
  • Skip Backward (double arrow to the left of the Pause button): Clicking this button takes you backwards 1 minute in the current program.
  • Skip Forward (double arrow to the right of the Pause button): Clicking this button takes you forward 1 minute in the current program.

The recording that the Pause/Resume functions create is temporary; if you change channels, stop the channel, or exit from the TVUPlayer, it's gone.

The Personal Video Recorder (PVR)

TVUPlayer versions 2.4.7 and above include the Personal Video Recorder (PVR). The PVR allows you to schedule recordings that will automatically happen in the future, much like a VCR. The PVR is available with a special introductory offer, good until August 31st, 2009: US$12.00 for one year plus one free month. There’s a no-risk 24-hour trial; you can cancel within 24 hours for a full refund. Starting September 1st , the PVR price becomes $1.99 per month, also with a 24-hour trial.

Subscribing to the PVR

To subscribe to the PVR, you'll need a TVU account, with credit card information. You can start the subscription process by clicking the new Record button (to the left of the Skip Backwards button) in the TVUPlayer.

Alternately, you can start by creating an account here. If already have an account, you can add a credit card to your account by selecting Change personal and financial information on the Your Account page. Again, you start the subscription process by clicking on the Record button.

You can cancel the next renewal of your subscription (i.e. the next credit card billing) at the Your Subscriptions page, which is accessed from the Your Account page. You'll continue to have access to the PVR until your current subscription runs out.

You'll have access to the PVR within a few minutes of subscribing. Make sure you're signed in to the TVUPlayer (click on "Sign in" at the top right of the TVUPlayer). The Record button will turn red when it's available to you.

Scheduling a Recording

To schedule a recording, click on the Record button. If you're a PVR subscriber, this will open the Recording Control Center:

The Recording Control Center

To schedule a recording, select a date, a start time (this is in 24-hour time, so for example 20:00 is 8PM), the channel number to record on, and the duration of the recording. You can also name the program (to help remind you what it was); this is optional. Then click the "Record this Program" button. This adds the program to the To Do List, which is a list of recordings that will be automatically created in the future. You can cancel any future recording by selecting it in the To Do List and clicking the "Cancel this Recording" button.

Alternatively, if you're already watching a program, you can record the next hour (or any length of time you want) by simply clicking the "Record What I'm Watching Now" button.

The TVUPlayer has only one "tuner", which means that you can only receive one program at a time. This means that you can't record two programs at the same time, or record one program and watch a different live program. You can record one program, and at the same time watch a previously recorded program.

Watching a Recording

To watch a program you previously recorded, click on the Recordings group (next to Favorites, near the top of the TVUPlayer). This brings up a list of your recordings.

The Recordings group

To play a recording, click the blue Play button for any one of the recordings. You can also delete a recording by clicking the red Erase (X) button. This frees up space on your hard disk. You can also name or rename a recording by clicking on the "Edit Program Name" button in the bottom left of the recording.

If you cancel your PVR subscription, you will lose access to your recordings when your subscription runs out. You'll still be able to Erase them, though. If you re-subscribe to the PVR, you'll regain access to the recordings.
