Long Beach Yacht Club Premieres 360-Degree VR Livestream of 2018 Congressional Cup

Samsung 360 Round professional VR cameras and TVU Router provide high-end production quality and untethered, high-bandwidth IP connectivity for LBYC stadium match race event

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA– May 16, 2018 – Sailing fans all over the world viewed last month’s 2018 Congressional Cup regatta as it has never been seen before, courtesy of a partnership between the Long Beach Yacht Club’s(LBYC) media team and several technology firms, including TVU Networks, Samsung Electronics America, Telstra Broadcast Services, BOXX.TV, broadcast integration and project manager Suitelife Systems and wireless innovation house Ocon Solutions Company (OSC).

In its 54thconsecutive year the Congressional Cup is known in sailing circles as the ‘gateway to the America’s Cup, as it features the who’s who of match racing sailors. On two boats off Long Beach Veterans Memorial Pier, two TVU Routers served as sea-bound hot spots, sending 360-degree, live VR footage from two Samsung 360 Round VR cameras– one on a sports fishing boat and one on the anchored MV LOYNES LBYC race committee boat. The TVU Routers provided the high-bandwidth IP connectivitynecessary to send moving, high-data VR images from the water to the pier for VR post-production stitching and VR IP network distribution.

Two TVU Routers supplied the connection needed for the 360 Round VRcameras to provide live distribution to the Samsung VR Video website, https://samsungvr.com. The live video was also linked to the Congressional Cup web site, www.thecongressionalcup.com, and to the Tribeca Film Festival’s website.

TVU Router uses multiple data communication links simultaneously such as cellular 4G/LTE, Cable, DSL, Satellite, or WiFi to deliver a highly reliable broadband connection up to 200Mbps remotely. TVU Router can dynamically aggregate up to a dozen different data connections for maximum flexibility. It supports multiple 4G/LTE connections from different cellular providers to power even the most demanding and data-intensive applications anywhere.

“The VR wireless connectivity from the water back to the pier and the network streaming set up performed flawlessly thanks in large part to TVU Router,” said Geoffrey Talbot, Executive Producer of the five day live streaming TV production. “Integrating 360-degree footage requires an enormous amount of bandwidth. We couldn’t have done it without the rock-solid connectivity of our TVU Router, which performed above and beyond expectations from stationary and moving boats.

“We were excited to embrace the ground-breaking VR production values with our HD live streaming production, knowing it would generate enthusiasm with younger viewers around the world.  Truly, the backbone of this endeavor is stable, high-bandwidth connectivity from moving vehicles in literally any location,” said Talbot. “We believe that adding high-quality VR coverage and making that video accessible online will bring new generations to the sport.  We have to be able to transport all of this data-intensive video live and untethered.”

The Long Beach Yacht Club Media team produced five days of live broadcast quality coverage of the regatta including a Video over IP direct feed to the New York Yacht Club and worldwide distribution over social media. Ocon Solutions oversaw the wireless technical and production preparations for the 2018 Congressional Cup.

“VR footage requires extensive bandwidth to view the images properly,” said Jim Ocon, President, OSC. “With the lack of infrastructure on site, multiple sources of 360-degree VR coverage, and movement, this set up stretches the limits of high-bandwidth connectivity in a live, real-world environment. I knew if any technology was up to the feat, it would be TVU Router. It was designed specifically to address this type of application. We were particularly eager to show how the high-bandwidth IP connectivity of the TVU Router helped deliver Samsung 360 Round’s stunning VR imagery of the event. The end result was simply spectacular.”

“The producers of this event are merging the best of technology with the best of sports to bring sailing to viewers in a way they’ve never seen it before,” said Paul Shen, CEO, TVU Networks.  “We couldn’t be happier to be part of such a forward-thinking production.”

NAB 2018: TVU Networks Removes Barriers to Video Production and Distribution with New Story-Centric Workflow Approach

TVU MediaMind Platform Automates Content Indexing and Production

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA – April 5, 2018 – With developments such as AI, big data, IoT and cloud computing, all businesses are undergoing rapid changes to their business models that also hold the possibility of a significant upside in efficiency.Industry 4.0*is a term coined to describe how these technologies can combine to produce a ‘smart factory,’ capable of making decisions and performing autonomously. This follows on earlier breakthroughs, including: 1) mechanization powered by steam and water 2) mass production powered by electricity and 3) computerized automation.

Currently, the video industry is experiencing its own sea change in the way video content is produced, distributed and consumed. Referred to as Media 4.0 or as ‘Enabled Media’ by TVU Networks, this evolution enables the customization of video per the specific requirements and tastes of individual consumers and its distribution through an automated process. AI engines recognize video content and automate its creation and distribution to cell phones, streaming to the Internet, television and social media channels.

TVU Networks, the global technology and innovation leader in live IP video solutions, will demonstrate its answer to Media 4.0, the new TVU MediaMind platform, during theNAB Shownext week from April 9-12 in Booth C1707.

“Media 4.0 is about enabling the mass production of content for individual audiencesthrough the automation of video production and distribution,”said Paul Shen, CEO,TVU Networks. “This helps media companies looking to produce more content without increasing their expenditures. Instead of creating content manually, technology can enable the tailoring of that raw video to viewers on specific social media platforms, cell phones, streaming channels, and TV. Archived footage can be repurposed as an asset complete with searchable metadata. Media companies can’t earn revenue from material that’s never broadcast.”

TVU MediaMind consists of TVU Contribution Automation, TVU AI Engine, TVU Real Time Search Engine, TVU Workflow Engine and TVU Producer Pro. From the start of the video production process, all video is immediately indexed based on its metadata by TVU MediaMind’s AI real-time search engine. Using an entirely cloud-based model complete with voice and object recognition, live and pre-produced video clips are located and indexed down to the exact frame and can be shared instantly. MediaMind automates the ability for different production groups to find the content. With cloud-based TVU Producer Pro, different content can be cost-effectively created for different platforms or even audience groups.

Existing TVU customers can quickly utilize the benefits of TVU MediaMind, such as a real time search engine for all of their media assets. The TVU AI Engine can be enabled with tens of thousands of TVU Transceivers deployed around the world.

“TVU MediaMind creates a new story centric workflow, as opposed to a program-centric one, that removes the barriers involved in video production and how the video is shared with different production groups,” explained Shen. “It opens the floodgates for how programs are produced and distributed, removing barriers from the social media, digital and broadcast programming departments and creating one centralized search engine for all raw materials, live or recorded, that feeds all channels. And it helps media companies better target their audiences with appropriate programs.”

TVU Networks has over 2,500 customers in more than 85 countries. NAB 2018: TVU Networks’ Contribution Automation Service Streamlines the Video Content Acquisition Process

Intelligent workflow automation focuses on story-based content collection

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA– April 4, 2018 – At the NAB Show next week, TVU Networks, the global technology and innovation leader in live IP video solutions, will introduce TVU Contribution Automation Solution (TVU CAS), an innovative service which automates planning, resource management, acquisition, transmission and routing, and also features integrated metadata and contribution management. Furthermore, TVU also provides an open API (TVU CASAPI) for acquisition devices, transmission devices, receiving devices and routers as well as news systems to be integrated into TVU CAS. TVU Networks will exhibit at NAB in Las Vegas next week in booth C1707.

As demand increases for more live content for news, sports and entertainment, and fast production process in general, streamlining the live video content acquisition and processing of live video content is becoming a necessity for most media organizations, such as TV stations. TVU CAS is able to have the entire acquisition process planned at story creation stage. The resources, such as people, devices and routing are assigned to story and tasks. In addition, all assignments are pushed to field devices, and the personnel who are involved. It will automatically execute the planned tasks according to the plan. Metadata, such as story slug, and information are automatically captured and associated with the corresponding content without human involvement.

“The existing human-driven content acquisition process is inefficient for the increased demand for production efficiency. TVU CAS addresses today’s production needs because it focuses on people and stories rather than machines and manual process,” said Paul Shen, CEO, TVU Networks. “The entire content acquisition process becomes streamlined and more efficient with TVU CAS and allows the focus to shift from a rigid program centric to a flexible story centric workflow.”

NAB 2018: TVU Networks’ Entire Video Transmission Product Line Now Available with HEVC

TVU now offers software-based HEVC support for its TVU One, TVU MLink 4K, TVU Anywhere and TVU Grid solutions

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA – April 3, 2018 – At next week’s NAB Showin Las Vegas, TVU Networks will demonstrate its commitment to providing customers with the most efficient technologies available by showcasing its lineup of solutions that offer software-based HEVC encoding. Providing high-quality video with improved compression efficiency, TVU’s HEVC supported products now include the TVU One mobile IP newsgathering transmitter, TVU MLink/MLink 4K encoding solution, TVU Anywhere mobile transmitter apps and the TVU Grid live video switching, routing, and distribution system. TVU Networks will highlight all of its latest solutions at NAB in booth C1707.

“We are constantly looking for ways to help our customers reduce their video production costs while allowing them to deliver the best live shot regardless of the transmission environment. We address this with the integration of HEVC into our entire line of transmission solutions, allowing our customers achieve much greater efficiency, “ said Paul Shen, CEO, TVU Networks. “In addition, our HEVC transmission solutions incorporate distinct software technology advantages with our proprietary Inverse StatMux Plus (IS+) transmission algorithm, and the ability to deliver low latency during fast bitrate changes to ensure a reliable and high-quality picture in a challenging transmission environment.”

When accessing a public Internet connection, especially cellular mobile Internet, the availability of bandwidth is constantly changing. TVU’s patented Variable Bitrate Encoding technology enables a TVU transmitter to dynamically adapt the video encoding bitrate to the available bandwidth of the network. In a mobile Internet environment, bandwidth fluctuations change very fast and very often. TVU’s software-based encoder is designed to react to bitrate changes within a single frame time. This ensures the live video is transmitted with the best picture quality and without any interruption caused by bandwidth fluctuation.

Furthermore, the TVU software-based encoder is optimized to the transmission environment. In contrast, most commoditized hardware encoder chips are not able to be easily adapted to the specific environment often demanded by mobile transmission. For example, TVU combines a software-based HEVC encoder with TVU’s industry-leading IS+ transmission technology, providing an extremely efficient and robust solution for transmission in hostile environments.

With a software encoder, TVU can continuously improve the encoding technology as it has done in the past with its H.264 devices. A customer can purchase TVU hardware today with the knowledge that their TVU equipment will continue to improve with newer technology through a simple software upgrade.

TVU Grid, the world’s largest IP-based distribution network, will also be upgraded to HEVC.  With HEVC, major media companies are able to exchange content with their partners at an even lower cost on bandwidth. TVU Grid v5.0 also features TVU Grid Market, which gives users the ability to exchange, share, and sell video content using the solution’s infrastructure. TVU will also demo the TVU One with HEVC mobile newsgathering transmitter at NAB, which delivers dependable HD quality video with half-second latency within an ultra-compact and rugged hardware chassis. Additionally, the TVU MLink TE4500 HEVC and 4K rack-mount encoder will be shown – which provides cellular 4G LTE transmission capabilities to satellite and microwave vehicles, vans and trucks.

Largest Installation of Cellular Mobile Uplinks in Egypt as ANA Selects TVU Networks Exclusively for Newsgathering Operations

Transmission Reliability, Picture Quality, Operational Cost Savings, Remote Software Upgrades and Small Form Factor Cited as Reasons for Selection

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA – March 28, 2018 – As part of the largest implementation of TVU Networks’ gear in Egypt, the Cairo-based Arab News Agency (ANA) purchased more than 55 new and upgraded IP video equipment such as TVU One mobile IP transmitters and TVU Transceivers for its newsgathering operations. ANA will use TVU Networks equipment exclusively for all its cellular uplink and video delivery needs, including IP streaming.

ANA is a premier media production provider in the Middle East with a reputation for high-end technical innovation. The company provides media services, including newsgathering and distribution, to broadcasters in the Middle East and North Africa. TVU Networks’ equipment reseller in the Middle East, Broadcast & Studio Solutions (BSS), coordinated the sale.

“As a service provider, we need to provide our clients with the latest technology and cost efficiencies,” said Ahmed Sonbol, Deputy General Manager, ANA. “It’s our business to stay on top of the best-performing, most cost-effective technology for our customers. And when you’re shooting and transmitting breaking news 24/7 for those clients, the speed and reliability of your equipment is critical. With that in mind, we knew we needed TVU.”

ANA conducted a thorough competitive evaluation before switching from its previous cellular uplink providers to exclusively TVU Networks. According to Sonbol, one big benefit in TVU’s favor was the cost-savings of  TVU Grid, TVU’s IP video switching, routing and distribution solution. With TVU Grid-enabled transceivers, ANA will reduce costs over its previous SNG set up, which required an on-site engineer, technician, camera crew, large amounts of equipment and the procurement of satellite time. With TVU Grid, a broadcaster can take a live video transmission from one location and share it with any number of Grid enabled stations in the world. TVU’s Transceivers power TVU Grid.

“With the abilities of our new TVU Grid, we can distribute signals cost effectively, which gives us a real competitive advantage,” said Sonbol. “With our previous system, we had to book time and send a crew, which is expensive. Now, if I have a press conference we’re covering for example, I just need one person with a TVU One unit at the site, send the signal to our TVU Grid, and we distribute it. And we can share that transmission with other clients.”

The TVU One mobile transmitters will be used in the field, delivering video content mainly for ANA’s breaking news and sports coverage. Sonbol points to the units’ HEVC-compatibility as another reason for their selection: “We’ll be upgrading our TVU One’s to HEVC when Egypt completes its network switchover from 3G to 4G. When the 4G switchover is complete, this will be fantastic for us.”

Sonbol also cited the ease of updating with TVU. When the time comes to upgrade ANA’s TVU equipment, it can all be done remotely as software updates compared to other vendors’ hardware-only updates.

Sonbol also points to the stability and quality inherent in TVU’s patented Inverse StatMux Plus (IS+) technology. Thanks to the IS+ transmission algorithm, TVU transmitters can simultaneously aggregate any combination of bandwidth mediums including cellular 3G/4G LTE, WiFi, Ethernet, Ka-band and Ku-band satellite, microwave, microwave mesh and BGAN and transmit HD quality video with half-second latency. “We’ve tested the IS+ with a low bandwidth signal,” said Sonbol. “It never cut out. The stability and picture quality are amazing. For us, with the largest number of cellular mobile uplinks units in Egypt, this is of utmost importance.”

The lightweight and compact size of the TVU One transmitters were another plus. “They’re much lighter and smaller than the uplink units we’ve been using for the past four years. Just one camera operator with TVU gear and a camera, and you’re all set.”

With TVU Grid, a broadcaster can take a live video transmission from one location and share it with any number of Grid enabled stations in the world. TVU Grid enables stations to take any video source, whether it be a SDI feed, IP video camera, Internet video, or a TVU transmitter and distribute the live video stream to any number of other Grid enabled locations with sub-second latency. TVU Grid’s simple to use interface gives users control over the switching and routing of video streams from anywhere on a network of Grid enabled locations.

The TVU Transceivers can accept multiple video streams from any IP-based video source as well as any TVU Networks video transmitter. TVU Transceivers offer an optional feature that allow users to take a live TVU transmission and output it to a third-party website or CDN. The live video is encoded into an IP format and can be sent to up to six different remote locations. Integration with Facebook Live can be added to TVU Transceivers for live video streaming to the network.

The TVU One live mobile IP transmitter with integrated HEVC compression replaced DMC’s existing TVU mobile units. Featuring TVU’s patented Inverse Statmux Plus (IS+) transmission algorithm, TVU One can deliver HD quality video with half-second latency at 3Mbps. It can transmit simultaneously over multiple mediums, including cellular, microwave, satellite, BGAN, WiFi and Ethernet.

TVU Networks has over 2,500 customers in more than 85 countries. The TVU Networks family of IP transmission and live production solutions gives broadcasters and organizations a powerful and reliable workflow to distribute live video content to broadcast, online and mobile platforms. TVU has become a critical part of the operations of many major media companies.
